These homemade cards are easy for kids to make with materials you probably have around the house. My kids love to make cards for the adults in their lives and this method is great for special occasions including Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays, and more.
I hope you enjoy making these simple cards with the kids in your life.

Materials Needed
- Paint (I love the Crayola washable project paint for many of the arts & crafts project I do with my kiddos. It’s available in several fun color varieties including neon and bold but for this project we used the classic colors.)
- Cardstock
- Scissors
- Spray bottles. You can use any spray bottle that produces a light mist. We like to re-use old spray bottles, such as those that the kids’ detangler spray came in. But we’ve also done this craft with spray bottles from the dollar store.
- Paper clips
- Kids craft trays or other backdrop to work on such as newspaper or cardboard
- Water
- Masking tape
- Printer (optional)
Instructions for Homemade Cards
1. Decide what shape you or your child wants to paint on the card. Large shapes without a lot of small details work best. This time we did a butterfly. Flowers without a lot of details work well too, as do balloons.
2. Either draw the outline of the shape you want or print it out on cardstock. Tip: Keep in mind this image will turn into a stencil for your project. Make sure to keep the image on the lower half of your paper if you’ll be folding your card horizontally or on the right half of your paper if you’ll be folding your card vertically.
3. Cut out the stencil. I did this part as my children are too young for this detailed of cutting. Tip: Use masking tape to close the first cut you made to get from the edge of the cardstock to the image you cut out to make your stencil.
4. Place the stencil you’ve created over the cardstock you’ll be painting for your card and paperclip the two pieces of cardstock together. Place them on the Kids craft trays or other backdrop to work on such as newspaper or cardboard to protect your work surface from being sprayed with excess paint. This is also a craft I like to do outside and use the washable paints just in case of overspray for easy cleanup.
5. Prepare your spray paint bottles. Mix a ratio of 1:1 Crayola washable project paint and warm water in your spray bottles.
6. Spray your cardstock. Tip: Don’t spray too close to your stencil so you don’t drench the paper. Also try to keep the spray perpendicular to the card so you are spraying straight down rather than spraying under your stencil.
7. Once you are satisfied with the amount of color sprayed remove the stencil and let it dry.
8. Once dry, fold the card and add any writing you would like. If your kids are old enough, have them add a handwritten message inside the card to personalize it.
